Aiming for a greener future, Vodafone Group is steadfast in its commitment to eliminate Scope 1 emissions by 2030. The company is adopting a series of initiatives to achieve this goal, including:
- The transition of its vehicle fleet to electric options.
- The implementation of energy-efficient cooling systems in data centres and masts.
- The exploration of alternative backup power sources for masts.
- The enhancement of office energy efficiency through measures such as heat pump electric heating and LED lighting.
Furthermore, within Scope 2, Vodafone aims to reduce indirect emissions stemming from purchased electricity, heating, and cooling services from external providers. A notable milestone was reached in July 2021 when Vodafone’s European operations, spanning offices, masts, and data centres, transitioned to 100% renewable electricity. The company has set its sights on achieving the same feat across all its operating countries by 2025.
Vodafone’s successful pursuit of this objective has been underpinned by strategic partnerships with energy enterprises, incorporating Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) certificates, as well as long-term investments in solar and wind farms located across various sites in the UK. A prime example is the installation of 720 solar panels at a Mobile Telephone Exchange in Gloucester, generating approximately 240,000 kWh of renewable electricity annually and supplying 12% of the site’s energy needs, thereby reducing reliance on the national grid and fostering on-site energy autonomy.
Further contributions to the cause include the installation of a self-powered mobile phone mast in Wales, collaborations with electricity providers to co-fund new solar farm projects, and the ongoing transition to an all-electric fleet of vehicles for engineers, thus ensuring the seamless operation of the network.
